I had the opportunity to join Dr. Margolis on a medical mission to Mbarrara, Uganda. We arrived in Africa on March 28 and we were there for 7 days total with 3 days of travel alone. 5 of those 7 days consisted of the group in the operating room. When we were done, we had operated on 43 women with fistulas. Most of them were women with Vesico-vaginal fistulas. I have been so fortunate to have experienced such a magnificent journey to Africa. I was able to help Dr. Margolis with fetching medicine and or utensils he utilized during surgery. I was able to witness first hand what it was like to undergo a fistula repair. The major difference is is the fact that for the most part the medical technology was not there. And the utensils needed for the type of surgery was scarce. All I can say is that I have learned that my situation was not as bad as the women I met there. They have forever touched my heart. I plan to go to Africa every year with Dr. Margolis. Not because I feel bad and or feel like I need to go and help, but because the Ugandan people have shared something special with me. They shared their country with me. They shared their beautiful smiles with me. And they welcomed me. They always began a conversation with me with “You Are Welcome.” I am so thankful. I have seen more than most people will ever see and I am fortunate.
